”Neither do I condemn you

John.8:2-11

How many read this text:

1. ”We should not judge others.”

2. ”Sin is not so serious.”

3. ”Jesus doesn’t think sexual sin is serious.”

What the text really says::

The trap of the Pharisees:

Master” –

”a woman” –

” Moses” -

What do you say?”

The response of Jesus:

1. Jesus wrote in the sand:

What did Jesus write in the sand?1.  The sins of the listeners?2.  The ten commandments? ”I am the Lord, your God” Ex.203.  The tenth commandment? ”You shall not covet your neighbors wife. ” See Matthew 5:28 ”But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”4.  Does it refer to to the tables of the covenant,  ”written by the finger of God”? Ex. 31,85.  Does it point to roman practice in courts: the judge wrote his sentence before proclaiming it. 6.  Does it link with Jer. 17,13: Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust because they have forsaken the LORD, the spring of living water. Compare John 7:38: "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him."

2. Jesus answers the pharisees

If any one of you is without sin …”

- Only the perfect has the right to judge?

- Only the ones without lust can condemn adultery?

- Those who judge must not be guilty of the same offense.

What does God’s Law say about us? (Rom3,23)

3. Jesus speaks to the woman

Has no one condemned you?”

What does the Gospel tell us? (Rom.3,24)

Then neither do I condemn you”

1.        Jesus didn’t want to be a secular judge

2.        Jesus didn’t want to take part in an invalid trial

3.        Jesus sees the woman with eyes of the creator

4.        Jesus has the RIGHT to FORGIVE (Joh.3,17, Matt 9,1)

5.        We still live in a time of GRACE, where forgiveness is avaiable

6.        Jesus illustrates the LAW and the GOSPEL

Jesus’ challenge to us:

  1. The seriousness and extent of sin
  2. Admission of sin
  3. Forgiveness for sin
  4. Fight against sin

”Go now and leave your life of sin.”
